For the English whores

Postby Rangerr » Tue May 29, 2007 1:45 pm

Ok so my boss and I had a 10 minute debate on this question.

When writing the sentence

"Thank you for allowing Matt Hook and __ to inspect your dam."

is the pronoun following the name I or me.

I think that

"Thank you for allowing Matt Hook and I to inspect your dam."

sounds correct, however my boss says he thinks it should be " Matt Hook and me". neither one of us was able to come up with any concrete support for our arguments. However he is the boss and since he is the one signing his name to it, I agreed to do it his way.

So I ask you, is it I or me. (Also if you can provide evidence either way, that would be fantastic.)

A sentence is constructed of the Subject, Verb and Object. "I ate food." is an example in its simplist form. "I" being the Subject, "ate" is the verb and "food" is the Object. The Object always follows the verb, the Subject always precedes the verb and the verb is alway between the Subject and the Object. When the Pronoun describing oneself is used whether it is "I" or "me", "I" is used in the Subject and "me" is used in the Object. Therefore in the construction of the sentence you propose Rangerr, the Sujbect is the unnamed "You" mentioned in "Thank you", the verb is "Allowing" and the object is "Matt and me". Since the pronoun describing oneself is used in the object, "me" is the correct choice, contrary to popular belief.

It also helps to remove the other object from the sentance and see which makes sense:

"Thank you for allowing me to inspect your dam."
VS.
"Thank you for allowing I to inspect your dam."

I have seen 3 arguments in favor of the word "me" yet it only received 1 vote....does anyone else find that odd?

I didn't even vote, no sense if the correct answer was already explained.
