prayers

We had a visiting priest from Providence College today. Our full time priest is split between two churches and must alternate each weekend between the two. There just aren’t enough catholic priests any more.

Today’s priest is also a professor of Theology at Providence College, a Roman Catholic liberal Arts school in nearby Rhode Island. During his sermon he was discussing the difference between Prayers of Petition and Prayers of Intercession. Petitions are those prayers you pray for yourself. Intercessions are those prayers where you pray on behalf of someone else.

Recently during a Theology exam, one student turned in her work and the professor/priest read her answers to the questions. An example of a Prayer of Petition is when I pray that I will do well on my Theology exam. An example of a Prayer of Intercession are my prayers for the father’s sick mother, who I have been praying for every night this month.
