While I would like to say this is intrusive on the students rights, I would have to admit that not only did I attend after school functions under the influence of alcohol, I also showed up to school hungover/still drunk on a number of occasions. And once drank Jack D. during class in the bathroom.......in the 8th grade. (That was a good day). So I can't really say anything without being a complete hypocrite.

having a drink is never a problem or really a bad thing. showing up to a high school dance or even blitzed is fucking retarded. you ruin the event for other people and make a fool out of yourself.

and yes its fucking with student's rights. but the people who drink elsewhere with friends or whatever, thats fine. its morons who get drunk and go to school events that are bad seeds any way and should be targeted.

random related story: for my highschool grad we had a place do our photos. i went in the morning, no problem. some indian kids (india indian) got hammered, went in, caused huge problems which saw 1 or 2 photographers quit the job. i mean, embarassing bad, that gt kids suspended and like 2 months of guilt trip bs on our grad year.

i lol'd

Students don't have rights, their parents do. And therein lies the problem. Although I agree that this is a violation of civil liberties, the MTA (Mass Teachers Association) will argue that many parents are disengaged from their children's lives and since the teachers are forced to be "engaged", they need to have the ability to come down hard on the students.

In either case, the MTA is one of the most liberal organizations in this state and I think they are a bunch of loonie birds. They are doing a shit load more of unconstitutional crap. They have a room full of high priced attorneys on their side and the Massachusetts legislature. (85% Democrats)
