Students don't have rights, their parents do. And therein lies the problem. Although I agree that this is a violation of civil liberties, the MTA (Mass Teachers Association) will argue that many parents are disengaged from their children's lives and since the teachers are forced to be "engaged", they need to have the ability to come down hard on the students.
In either case, the MTA is one of the most liberal organizations in this state and I think they are a bunch of loonie birds. They are doing a shit load more of unconstitutional crap. They have a room full of high priced attorneys on their side and the Massachusetts legislature. (85% Democrats)
