BF2 == more than a gig of ram?

Postby roadrunner » Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:00 am

Well I received and installed a 6800 GT and cranked all the video settings up. The graphics are awsome but not playable because of frequent stutters. Reading online found a few threads that stated BF2 takes more than a gig if you max all video and sound settings. Anyone else seen this? I moved the settings down to medium and it was very smooth.

Ugh I hope it is not true because I won't waste money on purchasing outdated ram. Oh well I can't wait to see what other games look like maxed.

How exactly do you mean unplayable, like does the fps go down drastically? Choppy? or just unable to play downright?

I could play BF2 maxxed out with a 9600 SE, as long as it was a MP game with noone else in it... I just leave it on Medium, and I have 9800 pro and 1.5GB of ram... >shrugs< Meh. Ram is good. Get more.

Since this console command to show FPS did not seem to work for me I still have to loadup fraps to see the FPS. I suspect the FPS is low but its more if I move the mouse fast I get what can be described as small lag spikes. This was on a 16 person server so I imagine if I jump on a 64 the additional load for the extra graphics would make it worse.

Didn't have much time to test last night so I could not try changing individual settings like turning off AA. I also read that if you change your sound setting from high quality to medium you will save 200MB of ram.

I would love to add 500MB of ram but I can't see spending $100 to do it and plus I would have to buy PC2700 ram which would useless when I upgrade the processor and MB.

Hmm try seeing if you can turn down the terrain graphics, the character graphics you can keep on high.

Road go check out Hard OCP forums theres like 500 post about the game.lots about the requirements for it as well. With everything maxed out it DOES require 1+gig of ram.I play with Medium settings myself.I play with a 6800GT and hell the 3 main games i play I am unable to max out the graphics.

I've seen this lag you are referring to, Road. I've actually lagged into deadly situations. It is not fun. you suggest turning down video settings? that sucks because I love the graphics in this game.

I find performance > quality so I lower the minimum amount of settings to achieve smooth performance. Even though my CPU/MB/Memory are a little behind the times I was hoping that I could max out the video settings.

Don't get me wrong I really like the card and it puts my 9800 Pro to shame so its not a knock against it. I will definitely get 2gigs of RAM when I finally upgrade the rest of my system later this year. I have a feeling that BF2 will just be the first in a trend of games that will break the 1gig level.

I don't know what's with everyone's BF2. I only get lag because of bad servers and only freeze from bugs when logging in. In fact, my ram usage barely goes over 200 k and the game runs beautifully.
