ATI vs Nvidia, thoughts?

Postby Socco » Tue May 16, 2006 5:59 pm

Alright, I have a 128MB 5700LE and a 128MB Radeon 9600. That said, both cards suck.

I'm looking to buy a new card. Would you pick the 7900GT or the X1800XT? Thoughts?

EDIT: This is when I get a new computer, so interface, age of systems, etc. is not the issue.

7900GT for price to performance. It's what I have now, it's a great card.

Also, 7900GT has this thing called "volt modding" that pushes it's performance up to 7900GTX speeds. Google it.

I think nVidia has the edge lately.

I like ATI personally I have had alot of issues with Nvdia. ATI cards run hotter than Nvidia but for PS I still think ATI is a much better card. I like both but I think i will buy ATI on the next purchase. I presently own a Nvidia 7800GTX and a X800XL. The X800XL is really smooth with PS, the 7800GTX get some stutter here and there. For all other games I'm sure it really dose not matter.

My two cents

But your red, so it's like 20, or 30 bucks, not two cents ;).

I agree with road though, I really like ATI cards... I have had 2 nVidia cards, and both gave out after a year. My two ATI cards on the other hand. Those are just peachy.

LOL Monkey , I too have had problems with Nvidia cards I bought a 6800GT and it lasted about a week before it died. I sent it back for a refund. ATI makes a really durable card that can take a beating.

Right now my 9800 is starting to make some weird noises. The fans getting goofy, so I could either replace the fan, or replace the card. I think it's time for a new video card ;)! Plus, I'm getting a new monitor too, so I might as well get a new card.

such is the greatness of nvidia that, failing a return of a newer, STRONGER voodoo2, i would never try anything else.

ah, memories.

that was my roundabout way of shitting on ATi

Yeah, I gotta admit that from my experience ATI makes the more durable card. My 9800Pro survived a pretty bad power surge burn and didnt even show artifacts, and is still working flawlessly exactly like it did in my old computer. When I got my 7900GT a few weeks ago it had artifacts like nobody's business and was only getting half of what the other reviewers on Newegg.com claimed that they got on the Counter Strike: Source stress test, so I've sent it back for a replacement. I hope my replacement doesnt do the same, because even at half speed that card was more than I could have ever asked for.
