Sorry for troubling you ( I really do feel bad). I just picked it up yesterday and had enough time to hook it up and realize that my old windows xp copy is from dell and you can only install it on a dell. (how fucked up is that). So I went and bought what I thought was windows XP home edition, but I failed to notice the small print in the corner that says upgrade from Windows 98. So that won't work either and I can't take the damn thing back cause it's opened software. Sometimes I feel like maybe my parents built my swingset next to a wall.
Don't even bother to try to return it. What MS doesn't tell you is that you can insert any old disc to upgrade. Try using the one from your dell and if that doesn't work download a copy of 98 from the Pirate Bay. You can say "Oh, might as well pirate XP then, right?" Wrong. The XP install can't tell if the 98 is pirated but with Windows Genuinely Annoying (a.k.a "Advantage") it will nag you nonstop. It's open already, right?...
Also, if you have any copy 98 or later lying around it should work. If you don't have it installed on the HD it will ask for a disk. You can do a clean install this way.
Now, depending on where you live, this may be illegal based on local, national, international and other applicable laws. I advise you to check the legality in your locality and cannot accept responsibility for any legal issues you may encounter.
