Low cost desktops

Postby roadrunner » Thu Nov 16, 2006 3:31 pm

Anyone know of sites other than the usual vendors where I can find a good deal on a low end computer. My father is looking to upgrade and really the only thing he asked for specifically is a 17" lcd. I typically build my from parts so I am a little out of touch on the best place to look.

Eh, you can usually scrape around online, but Newegg is pretty cheap even on the low end stuff- and, if you need to RMA something, Newegg won't screw you.

Here's a 17" monitor. $180, $130 after $50 rebate.

If he doesn't mind the speakers in the monitor you can save there too.

Don't go with TigerDirect...I've ordered some stuff with there. Everything is cheap *after* rebate, but they don't do the rebates. Lost in the mail? Incomplete? Common excuses.

The real scam? The rebate company IS OWNED BY TIGERDIRECT! So they're just scamming you out of the rebate you submitted.

You can see what Tech deals are going on at fatwallet.com; If you have the courage to shop on Black Friday, there are some amazing deals;

Hope this helps you :D

EDIT: Corrected some grammar.

Oh, and if you are hitting $500 or below, it's often cheaper to buy it from Dell, plus, you have less to support.

Gotta agree with Socco on this one, Dell makes your life soo much easier. Monitor f'd up call Dell not me, PS died? Call Dell not me (you get the idea)
With family and such it always seems that if you put one together or direct them to some other place to get a computer, in their eyes YOU own the computer and anything that goes wrong is your problem and you'll fix it for them.

I built his last one (about 5 years ago) and I owned it. I still think I will own this one. Plus I don't think you can build a low end machine for less than what you can buy one.

I was leaning toward dell just for the reasons floobie stated. For anyone that bought something from them recently, do they collect sales tax?

Tigerdirect scares me. I remember when they used to be pretty good.

I may just upgrade my 19" lcd and give him it.

thx for the replys
