New Computer

Postby Henray » Fri Jun 29, 2007 10:45 am

Hey Gents,

I have read a few threads about building machines and in many of those threads you all refer to it as being relatively easy. I am not very computer savvy and only know enough to get by at work and to load these dreaded games in the evening.

If someone was incapable of constructing their own machine, what would you gurus suggest as an out of the box purchase?

Thanks,

Henray

I'd suggest going with what you know. I know many people have a problem with DELL, but that is where I got my machine from. It is an XPS gaming system. I've had it for 2 years now and it is still sharp. I did wipe the drive and reformat last September, but it is still in great shape. I'm not a computer savvy person either, nor do I care as long as the machine I have does what it is supposed to do and this one does that.

You won't get coupons on the XPS systems, but they are nice.

The best dell you can get is a Dell XPS via the small business section (you don't ACTUALLY have to order it under a business name/address). The support is better (i.e. people in the US), the machines come with less crap preinstalled, and XP is still selectable as an option.

There are other buyers, but there IS some value in Dell. ibuypower is good, ABS is good, a few others.

Wow I don't what to say on this one I build everything, but here is what you need to know;

First off go with a Core 2 Duo Intel
At least 2 gigs or RAM
Go for an Nvidia 8800 GTS or GTX video card
Hard drive well if you can get a machine with Raid 0 then get it , it will make loading Zones or continents much faster.

with that combo its a winner and should rock.

I found a local computer shop who builds PC's using either Intel or AMD sets (your choice). I bought mine about 1.5 years ago and it still is great. They built me a pretty nice gaming rig for under a grand (includes monitor/mouse/keyboard/speakers/software excluding Windows) I have been very happy with it. I reccommend looking into any local shops that may be in your area.

Quick update:

The IT guy in my office said I can purchase a new PC via the company and recevie a decent discount. Wanted to run the specs by some of you to see what you think. He siad the cost would be around $1,200. I dont really know what any of this means, but if you see any room for improvement or anything that may be overkill, your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Base: Intel Core 2 Quad Proc Q6600 (2.40GHz, 8MB L2Cache,1066FSB)

Memory: 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz - 4DIMMs

Primary Hard Drive: 500 GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Databurst Cache

Secondary Hard Drive: Same as Primary Hard Drive

Establish Hard Drive Petition: 20GB Primary Partition

Video Card 256MB Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS

Thanks Again,

Henray
