I am partial to Infantry and/or Armor. When I first played the armor role, I called up both IFVs and Armor. That is what I would do in real life. But alas, this game is not real life. Use only tanks if you are playing armor and use only infantry if you are playing infantry. I may use Airborne infantry to tie someone down if I am playing tanks. that is the only exception.
With Armor, I now use the medium or light tanks. It is better because they cost less and I can get more of them than the heavy tanks. I've gotten into the habit of rotating my forces. If I have 3 tanks forward fighting I have another three at the LZ. I push them forward and it never fails I lose my forward tanks about the time my replacements are only 10 seconds away. then they are able to take up where the previous three just died. Once the next three get into the fight, I have another three on the way to the LZ. I just keep em rotating. sometimes I have to do it in two's. never send out one it would be a waste.
With Infantry, I use a mix of Infantry and Anti-Tank squads. I may throw a sniper in the mix as well. I get as large a formation as possible in the first drop. I used IFVs (BMPs or Bradleys) the first match and after awhile realized they were a waste of time. I stopped using the IFVs and went straight for the Infantry. Keep your grunts in the woods or in the towns. As an experienced Infantryman I know that is the safest place for them. That is what I did in the last match I fought as an Infantrryman. I had squads and AT squads in every other building in the town. the American players eventually blew up the entire town because I had it overrun with Infantry. Every time he tried to push vehicles through the town they were hitting an AT Ambush. There Infantry was finding it difficult to move too and I was using my arty to the best of my ability.
I love this game. I am glad that draconis is taken to the Air, because it is nice to have some AHs hovering above and behind ready to pounce on incoming armor.
At 4:30 EST I was going to log off and get dinner ready for the kids. I went into the spectate mode and found Rangerr's Armor platoon. I took up a view from the rear deck of one of his T-64s. I watched the cross a bridge go into a Herringbone formation and then get jumped by a company of Apaches. He tried to make a run for the farm up the hill but the Apaches tore him up. It didn't help that a few M1s joined the melee. I watched Rangerr's last tank get fried and my daughter hit the power button on my computer. O_o I was a little disturbed. We will have to get together again sometimes.
I find it very difficult to respond to Xfire IMs during this game. I am generally extremely focused on what I am doing. Once I talked to my wife on the phone and lost everything. You need to be engaged the entire time you are in game.
