Regardless, looks to be a great game.
Good luck talking the parents into letting you have the gaming computer.
I must clarify that this is not an FPS. This is a team-based RTS game. There may be 8 or 9 people playing on any one side. of those 9 people you could have 2 people playing Armor, 3 people playing Infantry, 2 people playing Support and 2 people playing Aircraft.
With your starting points, you buy so many tanks, IFVs, Infantry squads, Attack helicopters, and artillery pieces that are available to you. Last night I was playing armor and I was able to start a match with either 4 M1 Abrams if I was on the US side or 3 T-80s if I was on the USSR side. Therefore each player represents about a platoon sized formation.
As you spend points on equipment, the amount of points you have in reserve slowly increases over time. As you take casualties, you can go into your replacements menu and order up a new Tank, Helicopter or Infantry squad. When you want that replacement to enter the map, you can call it in as an airdrop. At the beginning of the match you also establish a drop zone. this is where all your units start the game.
Because it is an RTS and not a FPS, there is no real character development. Although I did notice in one battle I had one T-80 tank that survived a number of attacks and had three chevrons on its unit identifier noting it as an experienced or veteran crew. Also other players that have racked up a number of points in many games have also advanced in rank. I think I saw a few Sergeants First Class on the team list at the end of the matches.
As in a real conflict you want your Infantry, Armor and Aviation assets to all work in unison on the same sheet of music. In PUG games, it is difficult to do that. Last night everyone was choosing Support because they can just sit back and pound areas with artillery. If everyone has artillery, the enemy will dominate merely by getting in close and attacking the guns. In some games it felt like I was the only one up front fighting against the enemy armor and Infantry.
