Monkey, I'm betting on the GPU myself. I had similar issues on a previously great graphics card and eventually the card burned itself out. If it gets worse, or eventually starts happening in Windows, it's obvious.
If you could try another game and see similar results, or get a high (post your in game reading here)
temperature rading from your GPU, then it's probably your GPU. Anything above 70C is too high. (Many people consider 60C too high, but with high end cards today, the ceiling is climbing).
Otherwise, get the latest
ATI or
Nvidia drivers for your graphics card.
