Ummm.... no the M1 is fit to be in service for the next 20-30 years, General Dynamics will be doing upgrades to M1 tanks, so they will be around for a long time. The M1 was designed to fight Russian Tanks out on the German Plains in case of Russia's aggression towards Europe or eastern Block countries. If a 5k RPG could kill a M1 it would have happened in Iraq? Also the Merkava Israel tank probably is the most Survivable tank on the Planet, why? well the Israel's thinking we don't have a massive population and we need all of our soldiers to survive to fight again.

aske the Iraqis in 91 air slaughtered them ground forces barely did anything, and they had 600000 men. in fact most battles us has had in recent time we overwhelm the ground with air to save lives.

The M1 can survive an RPG hit for the most part. It depends on what type of RPG and where it hits. All tanks are most vulnerable on the top, rear, and sides, in that order. Most tank losses in Iraq to date are from RPG hits on the top, you take that chance when fighting in cities. However, they're developing better and better armor and anti-RPG systems. One new system that's still being developed but has been tested on the stryker if I remember right, with success, is where a series of sensors are placed around the vehicle with basically claymores on every side. The sensors sense the RPG flying at the vehicle and detonate the claymores destroying the rocket before it ever hits. And yes, air power rules, but you can't win a war with the Air Force.

Yes air power is an amazing attacking force multiplier but it's still the infantry and armor that occupies and holds it.
