Bad English (Random English)

Japan is obsessed with the English language. Whilst most people know some, and some can speak really well, their use of the written language is terrible. Big corporations and local shops alike. Massive advertising campaigns all have English tag-lines and catchphrases, and none of it makes any sense. It is written everywhere and the more you write, the cooler your product is, or so it seems.

Some examples -


A big company like Lipton surely has foreign employees who could proofread the ad...


Again, I'm sure that 'Monalds' could get someone to spell the company name correctly...


All we need is pace love and understanding...


Note - This is CAT litter. I love my puppy. There is even a cat on the package.

Weird Products/Packaging

An expensive gift wrapped melon, or other item of fruit is a common gift. This one is actually reasonably cheap at merely about $85.

Only in Japan...

Some of these I took about 2 years ago - I searched for the most random english notices etc. when I first arrived. I loved it!

Some are pictures my room-mate took.

I took this pic today! There are about 6 or so variations on the packaging. All look equally perverse.

Tattoo's are bad in Japan. They are associated solely with the Yakuza. No Japanese person (generally speaking) will get a tattoo unless they are either part of the Yakuza, or want to appear that way. Many places - public pools, gyms and public baths/spa's will not allow you to enter if you have a tattoo.


But I really want to Smork!


Another fine exampl of a heavily modified van.


This is a weird place. I have seen it once or twice. The sign says 'Aka-chan no natsuke' which translates as baby-naming. It's a shop where you go to get help in naming your child. Naming a child in Japan is complicated, and involves finding a good meaning (the original meaning of the chinese Kanji characters) and the characters in the name being well matched. It takes most parents months of research.
Still weird to have a shop for it though...
