I'm using Vista Ultimate x64 and it runs like a dream. For gaming I haven't had any issues.
Of course, it does take 2GB doing basic tasks (outlook, firefox), so it'd be a poor choice for an old PC. But new DDR2-800 is $80/4GB, so it's a non issue. I haven't had any driver issues with my hardware either.
On that note, the ATI Catalyst x64 drivers are rock solid, as are the Giga-byte x64 drivers for my mobo.
SP1 should be great though, although I'm pissed about the fact that it can't be slipstreamed. (For those non-techies out there, it's taking your old CD and making a new CDR with the service pack on it. It saves time on reinstalls, and since the updated files are integrated, it cuts down on a lot of bugs when you update service packs within Windows. It's legal, and supported with Windows XP, but not Vista SP1.)
