Warhammer 40k, Dawn of War

Anybody play this game? I picked it up a couple months ago and loved it, awesome RTS, however once I beat the campaigns of both the original and the first expansion (just bought the second exp today), I was kinda stuck. I'm terrible at strategy games, mostly because I'm too slow; the normal bots kicked my butt on skirmish, so I wasn't about to stick my nose into multiplayer, but if someone else has this game and likes it, I'd be happy to play.

Beta, Lone, HAC et al. play these types of games. I like them to an extent as well. You just need to practice using a certain technique and improve upon it. Figure out how to group your troops up and let them attack or defend as a unit rather than picking out individuals. Resources Resources and more resources. have your workers and tons of them early on to gather all you can. the problem with playing Multiplayer is that every game has cheat codes and anyone who plays has them. I once played a game of Ages of Empires scenario against three other players. We were using an island map so I figured eventually I will need to build ships to invade my neighbors island. I got to a level where my workers were bringing in a decent amout of stuff and my army was slowly growing. I hadn't yet begun building any walls because I naively assumed i had time. next thing you know, four enemy warships pull up ans start offloading armies and workers. he builds a town center and other buildings and in no time at all I was out of the game. in order to do that, he had to have either magically created the necessary resources or magically created the ships and buildings. The force came too quick. I will not play an RTS multiplayer unless it is against people I know like Beta, Lone & HAC et al.

The problem/most awesome thing about this game is that the battles look so cool, I spend more time looking at them fight than I do building up forces or telling my men where to go. I didn't really think people could cheat on multiplayer strategy games, huh, shows what I know.

If you really like starcraft/warcraft, both were modeled after the original Warhammer 40,000 (board strategy game). Dawn of war, in turn, is modeled after Starcraft and Warcraft, so if you liked those, Warhammer is a good one.

PS, Both Tau and Necrons were added to as new races to the second expansion, Dark Crusade. I didn't know much about them before, but man, Necrons are Awesome!

Tactics are indeed defined by technology. but using a secret code that only a few possess in order to provide an advantage is not tactics but definitely cheating and the reson I do not play RTS online.

The great thing about this one is it was one of the first RTS's to use the squad based system for individual units. You build one infantry and get a squad. Than you can upgrade individuals with various weapons that a real life squad or platoon would have. It's really great fun. Gunther, one RTS that you would probably enjoy is Company of Heroes. It is great fun. I only have the single player demo and absolutely LOVE it. I'd get it if it wasn't $50 and the fact that no one else would have it to play with. Very realistic with a completely distructable environment. Soldiers are built in squads, they can take over heavy weapons of either side after the crews been killed, morale is a factor at times. Love it. I played the demo of Warhammer: DoW quite often when it came out but never bothered to buy the game. If you have it than maybe I'll pick it up.

That is a shame, when they were testing Company of Heroes I was invited to the Beta, but damn it! I never did. I wrote the key # down and lost it. Oh well, I will look for it. Speaking of destructible environments, I used to play Silent Storm which had the same thing. but that was a 3rd person shooter where you controlled 4-6 people. It also was a RTS game. I enjoyed that for quite some time.

I prefer the RTS that come out in Squads, Platoons, Companies or Regiments; what have you. That way you don't have to CTRL+1 to create a sub-unit like you do in AOE. Battle for Middle Earth does that too and so does another game that I played this summer--can't remember the title. It had to do with the Romans v. the Egyptians. You had a "Hero" who had special abilities and could level him up to acquire new talents.

I will look for demos of CoH & Warhammer. If I like it, I might go get it. My wife tells me that in my life, Everyday is Christmas! :D

That game would be Rise&Fall: Civilizations at War. I have it. It is okay, but not a very fun game to play often. Yes, in CoH, infantry come in squads, its pretty much company level combat with the pop limit. Tanks and vehicles and the like come as individuals. Same with AT guns, snipers, mortars, heavy machine guns. As it should be considering realism. I thought my guys were safe from a tank because my AT gun disabled its main cannon and my guys were safely inside a house so they couldn't be run over. However, the tank just rammed the house causing a 2nd story balcony to collapse taking a ranger with it. Soldiers will try to carry their wounded comrades away as well. Infantry can use grenades, bazookas, panzershrecks, BAR's, MP40's, etc. Absolutely love it. Go to fileplanet, they've got the demo for it on the front page.
