Tabula Rasa

Postby roadrunner » Mon Apr 24, 2006 7:34 am

I know we are looking at Huxley as our next game but we may want to keep an eye on Tabula Rasa. It is billed as a MMO FPS from NCSoft and it looks like it will be out later this year. I have been checking the website from time to time and was surprised to see that they mention a closed beta signup as I would have guessed from the lack of info the game was a few years out. Like I said there is very little info regarding it but I will still keep an eye on it.

This does look like a cool game. I am concerned that it may not attract many of our members. We have a large group of folks who like FPS games like Coop, Socco, McGuyver, Towelie, Demonseed, outlaw and many others. With Huxley they will get that. The following comments from 1up about TabRas raises a few eyebrows.
1up wrote:An RPG at heart, the third-person shooting action of the game definitely benefits those with developed twitch skills, while "sticky" weapon targeting makes sure that those less skilled in the art of digitial murderfication can thrive as well.

3rd Person shooter? Is this like WoW or EQ where you as the gamer, target the mob and then hit the Attack button and your character engages the target on his skill? This would be unlike a First Person Shooter where you as the gamer target a mob with your sights and pull the trigger--hit or no hit depends on you as the gamer being able to keep your sights on the target. Also, this mentions it to be an RPG. That is great with me. I love RPGs but are the rest of us going to go for that? Huxley has RP to it as well, but the true FPS players will ignore those functions and just kill stuff/people.
1up wrote: There are still spells in the game, special powers granted by angelic beings that can be used to buff your character or to take out your adversaries on the futuristic battleground, so that reinforces the RPG even as the glut of ballistic firepower at your disposal seemingly eats away at it.

This is truly my king of game. I know that I would love it. But I would also like to get a majority of the Enforcers involved in it. I would like to hear from
Coop, McGuyver, Izlude, Demonseed, lone, Templar, beta, HAC, Deadeye, Outlaw, bound, JBGetstoplay, Zroga, Rangerr, PSnewbie (?), Droxor, Kingg, Darkside, Panzerfaust, CapnHowdy, Cyinn, Mikeawesome, Backus, Cartman and stupidaxe. I'd like to know if this is the type of game they would like to play as well.

I agree I was a bit confused about the 3rd person comment. Then they mentioned twitch skills with is usually used to describe 1st person shooters. I like the mix the between weapons and other powers but not sure if I would like it if it lacked the 1st person part. I did not know if that was intential or just a typo.

Yeah, I agree road, I myself am also leaning towards the 1st person shooter genre. Any kind of MMOFPS that allows "sticky" targeting (I assume this to be auto lock on) isn't my cup of tea unless I was playing something like D&D or Evercrack and utilizing my spells. I think I'll wait for Huxely and see if it can take the place of PS as my dominate 1st Person shooter.

I think it will be a first person shooter as I saw this on the website

First person shooter fans who crave a richer gaming experience will appreciate a massively multiplayer game that is reactive to player choices and allows for a broad range of character movement.First person shooter fans who crave a richer gaming experience will appreciate a massively multiplayer game that is reactive to player choices and allows for a broad range of character movement.

Also I read a interview with the developer who stated

1UP: What games do you see as your direct competitors?

RG: Well, that's hard to say, because we feel we appeal to MMO players and shooter players alike. So in a sense we compete with games like Medal of Honor and Battlefield, but in the MMO space, we don't see another product attempting to do what we are doing. We believe we have a unique strategy that will bring lots of new gamers to MMOs.

I would imagine that it would have to be a first person shooter to compare itself to BF2 and MoH.

The interview also mentioned that there will be pvp availble but did not mention any details.

There seems to be little hype regarding this game so I am not sure why they are not trying to create a buzz.
