Battleground: Fantasy Warfare

Postby Gunther » Sun Feb 25, 2007 5:49 pm

This weekend there was a gamer's convention at the Holidy Inn in nearby Mansfield, MA. Today, I was curious enough to go check it out. I was not surprised to see gee....*err, gamers of all ages huddled around several tables playing Dungeons and Dragons, Star Trek Board games and many other unknown games. The D&D game I briefly watched consisted of one oversized 50-something year old gee*...er. Dungeon Master who is probably still living in mom's basement and an extremely elaborate and exquisite dugeon model/diorama laid out on a table 10' x 12' in size. The dungeon was quite impressive. Small miniatures were used to represent each of the spell casting gee*s....err gamers on the other side of the table. These guys distinctly resembled that video Rhonnin introduced to us about hating girls.

Although I was invited to play D&D with these gentlemen, I did not accept there invitation as I left my pocket protector at home. I did however find a fascinating game called Battleground: Fantasy Warfare. It is a card game of sorts, but not a real card game. It actually more closely resembles a game of Miniatures combat but instead of plastic or metal figures representing your combat formations, this game uses a 3.5"x2" playing card with information on it about the regiment or unit that you can use in your tactical combat situation or gameplay. They have starter decks representing Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Undead as well as expansion decks for each of those races. I practiced a sample battle today between two opposing human armies consisting of 7-9 cards on each side. It is a fun game and I will give a couple decks to my nephew turning 15 next month for his birthday.

I'm laughing so hard at that. I can't get over it. You said it so nonchalantly.
I kill people IRL.

The funny thing is that's how I describe the group I play with, a bunch of 30 and 40 years olds sitting in someone's basement playing D&D, so pathetic and amusing.

I played briefly when I was a teen. Not enough to remember how to play. I thoroughly enjoy playing Risk--Australia being my home turf there. As Road, Rhonnin and Demon know, I am a Big "Squad Leader" (AH) fan. That game is up my alley, I'm just not very familiar with it.
